Across This Aisle

Across this aisle, I see a woman I almost never knew
In a place so remote, love was the last thing that stood a chance
Circumstances unknown, situation restrictive
And yet I could not look away

Across this aisle, I see the strongest woman I’ve ever known
A woman whose triumphs dwarf even the most successful
A woman so courageous, resolute in her beliefs
A woman who has taught me the true meaning of bravery
A woman whose resolve can never be questioned
A woman committed to her God

Across this aisle, I admire the love of my life
A smile that brings much comfort
A heart filled with such undiscriminating love
A man with such fortune is what others must whisper

Across this aisle, it’s you who is slipping away
The uncertainty unaccepted, the unknown unwanted
How you must mock such fear
And doubt me when I utter I love you

Across this aisle, it’s you who I still see
It’s a situation much like before
My heart still skips a beat
Only this time I can’t move
Only this time it’s not real
I let you slip away once
And this proved to be one time too many

Across this aisle sits a body of nothing
Yet here I remain, bent over a puddle of tears
Reminiscing about the one true love I had once known

This might be one of my ten most well-written and personal poems. It's about falling in love with someone who you never could have imagined falling in love with, before realizing that you before being with this person, what you thought was love before meeting her was anything but. And then when the relationship begins to deteriorate, not being strong enough to fight to get it back. And then when it ends and she's gone, it's only then that you come to really understand that what you had was rare and that if it took you so long to find it in the first place, that the odds of finding it again anytime soon are against you.
